Across countries and cultures, the relationship between people and animals is constant, though never quite the same. Some bonds are affectionate, others practical, strange or uneasy. These photographs are small observations of lives being shared.
Wherever I travel I find myself watching people at work. Shops, markets and street trades may look very different from place to place, but the need to make a living is universal. These photographs are about the people behind those everyday transactions.
Berlin’s street art is constantly changing. I wander until something catches my eye, then carefully frame a small section and wait for the light. What I photograph may be altered or gone the following day, so each image preserves something that existed only briefly.
Not every photograph needs to shout. These are the quieter moments I have come across — people lost in thought, resting, waiting or simply getting on with life. Often nothing much is happening, and that is precisely what made me stop.
